Duels between Real Madrid and Girona have little history. This is explained by the fact that the clubs often play in different divisions. The creamy play in La Liga on a regular basis, while Girona play in the Segunda.
The clubs have held a total of 7 face-to-face meetings, of which only 5 were within the framework of the Primera Liga:
- 57% of the victories are on the side of the Club de Madrid;
- 29% for the Catalan side;
- Another 14% of games have not revealed the strongest.
In the Spanish Cup, only RM won.
A total of 32 goals were scored in the confrontation Real Madrid vs Girona H2H. An average of 4.5 goals scored per contest, which can be called an impressive figure even for the Spanish league. The most productive match between the clubs took place in 2018 and was completed with the victory of the creamy – 6:3. With a similar score difference the Madrid team achieved success in the same year, but not at home stadium. The final whistle saw 4-1. Girona won with a more modest score of 2-1.
The only draw between RM and Girona
So far, the only draw between the clubs was recorded in the 22/23 season. The capital club failed to beat Girona at home, thereby losing two points that would have come in handy in the fight for the championship. The game took place on October 30th as part of the 12th round of the Primera Division.
Teams for a long time could not unlock the rival’s goal. Only in the 70th minute finally manage to get an accurate shot. Federico Valverde shot and Vinicius Júnior planted the ball into the net. It seemed that the favorite of the game would have kept the winning score, but in the 80th minute the referee awarded a penalty. It was successfully taken by Christian Stoiani.
Real Madrid tried to make the final assault, but in the 92 th minute Tony Kroos was given the second yellow card and the “gentlemen” were left in the minority. The game leveled – no one was able to take the lead until the end of the match.
Girona defeat Real Madrid on the road
A no less exciting meeting of the clubs took place in the 24th round of La Liga in the season 18/19. In that game, Sergio Ramos was sent off the field, but it did not affect the outcome of the match. All the goals were scored up to that point.
The game began with a one-on-one goal by Girona player Stuani. His shot flew straight at the goalkeeper. But even if the ball had crossed the goal line, the referee would not have awarded a goal. It was an offside position. RM, as the host, made its first attempt to score in the 17th minute of the match. Vazquez managed to beat two defenders of the Catalan club, but failed to throw the ball over the goalkeeper. Girona immediately responded with a long-range strike by Stoiani. Courtois saved his team from scoring a goal.
The Madrid club were the first to open the scoring, with Casemiro getting on the scoresheet. Girona tried to quickly equalize but their counterattack ended in an inaccurate long-range strike. Karim Benzema tried to widen the gap, but he failed to beat the Girona goalkeeper in a head-to-head encounter. At the end of the first half, Marcelo scored for the “creamy”, but he was offside so the goal was not counted.
The second half started with an abundance of shots on goal. Benzema and Marcelo did their best. But Girona goalkeeper Bono controlled everything and didn’t let his own skill be questioned.
The turning point in the meeting came when the ball hit the hand of Sergio Ramos. He was in his own penalty box at the time. The referee awarded the spot kick from 11 meters, which was perfectly executed by Stoini. The scoreline read 1-1.
Now Girona were even sharper in their attacking moves. The team’s key attacking move happened in the 75 minute. A number of errors by the Flames led to a goal kick by RM. Courtois kept it out in front but it was the visitors’ player who was first on the ball. 1:2 – Girona wins on the away side. Prior to the match, no one really believed in such an outcome.
